Many believe that people and animals can take turmeric... but for best results, you need to take it with freshly ground black pepper.

Just like approximately 5% of turmeric is composed of an activec ompound called curcumin (the stuff that makes turmeric so great); about 5% of black pepper by weight is  comprised of a compound called piperine. Piperine is a potent inhibitor of drug metabolism. What this means is, that piperine makes curcumin a whole LOT more bioavailable - up to 2000% more!

Another way to boost the absorption of curcumin is to consume it in the whole food, turmeric root (fresh or dried as a powder) because natural oils found in turmeric root and turmeric powder can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin seven to eight fold. When eaten with fat, curcumin can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system thereby in part bypassing the liver. In short, it means that if you add freshly ground black pepper to your turmeric, you'll should see much better results that not taking the pepper.

Secondly, people generally like to take turmeric and black pepper with an oil but beware that oils aren't oils!  If you're taking turmeric for anti-inflammatory purposes, then be sure you don't use an oil that is high in Omega 6 as that is an inflammatory. Omega 3 is preferred by many turmeric consumers for its anti-inflammatory properties. Favourite oils of turmeric consumers are flaxseed oil, olive oil and coconut oil (being the favourite).  Be sure to ask questions in the Facebook user groups to understand why.
